Hi again guys! Welcome to part 3 of my newest series, "What Once Was". If you haven't read the first two parts, I would highly recommend that you do so, so you'll know what's been going on thus far. To briefly recap, Anne Riverton used to have the perfect marriage with her husband, Dave, but now any sparks that had once been there have faded...or at least on Dave's part. After calling Anne boring and plain, Anne got a makeover, compliments of her best friend, Jazzy. When we last left off, Jazzy's brother and Anne's good friend, John, asked if he could speak with Anne in private. Again, if you haven't read the first parts, I would so you can get the details :) Now, onto the story!
Author's Note: There is some mild cursing in here. Nothing too bad obviously because this is a teen site and younger kids do go on this. In general this chapter lives up to the rating of "teen" a lot more than the other two, which were very "E for everyone" rated. Just thought I should let you know! Happy reading!
"Um yeah sure," Anne answered, giving Jazzy an odd look and then stepping forward.
"Erm..completely in private," John requested as he turned around, looking right at Jazzy.
Jazzy narrowed her eyes at John, who simply looked at her blankly. He seemed to have no desire to let Jazzy stay there, so finally she just stomped off in annoyance. Anne would tell her what John had to say anyway. "Anne..." John said quietly, licking his lips nervously, "Umm hmm, I don't know how-"
"Is it the makeover? It's too much isn't it? I'm afraid Dave won't like it-"
"No," John interrupted, "It isn't that. No...you look great. Hmm...you know that I care about you a lot, right Anne?"
"Yes..." Anne said slowly, feeling a little confused at this point.
"And because of that, you know that I would never intentionally hurt you, right? You do know that?"
"Yes yes of course John, what's this all about?"
Above them, the clouds began to turn a dark gray color. They felt the first raindrops upon their skin, but instead of rushing them inside, John stayed put, looking conflicted and nervous. "I saw Dave with another woman," John finally rushed.
Anne's mouth dropped open for a moment, but then she quickly closed it, shaking her head and laughing a bit, "Well I mean he does have some friends who are women. It's no big deal really-"
"I wouldn't be telling you this if I thought they were just friends," John said sternly, looking her in the eye.
"I don't understand...what? When? I don't-"
"I saw them the other night...." "I was taking a late night stroll, it was nice outside and I had a bit of a headache, so I thought the fresh air would do me good," John began, "Well, anyway, as I was walking by one house, I saw Dave walk up to it." "I saw him ring the doorbell, and I was about to call out and say hi or something, but then someone answered the door." "It was a really gorgeous woman...I recognized her from awhile ago, when I saw her moving in. All I know about her is that her name is Selene, and I only know that because I had introduced myself that day. Anyway, they kissed each other on the cheek, which I didn't think was too big a deal...but I don't know, Dave almost seemed to be whispering into her ear and..." "I should have left then, but instead I just froze in my spot and watched as he went into her house. I kept thinking she was probably a friend, but I couldn't help but stay to make sure."
"Cut to the point, John," Anne said impatiently, not believing anything that John said. "Right, um I could see them from the window and they were flirting...." "And kissing..."
"Are you sure it wasn't a friendly kiss? Dave is a pretty affectionate person," Anne interrupted. "Yeah...I'm sure. Those kisses were most than just friendly." "A lot more," John stated firmly, trying to look Anne in the eye.
Anne felt sick to her stomach and increasingly faint. Her head was spinning. She didn't want to believe it. She couldn't believe it and she said so. "I don't believe you," Anne said, pointing angrily at John, "You're lying. I don't know why, but you're lying."
"Anne, I promise, I'm not lying to you," John said, wincing under her fiery gaze.
The sky exploded at that point and rain begun to pour onto them, but neither of them noticed. "Shove your stupid promise! I know you're lying to me! Dave loves me, he LOVES me! I don't know what the hell your problem is, but I know my husband, and I know that he would never, ever cheat on me. NEVER!" Anne screamed, growing slightly hysterical.
"No Anne," John said, his voice cracking, "I saw what I saw, I'm telling you this for your own sake. Anne I- I love you too much to see you get hurt by this guy...this guy who doesn't even give a damn about you-" "SHUT UP!" Anne shrieked, raising her hand to hit him but stopping at the last minute and merely screaming again, "He does care! He DOES care about me! He always has, and he always will. He loves me. HE LOVES ME DAMN IT! I KNOW HE DOES! I KNOW IT! I KNOW IT!"
At this point, Anne's voice cracked and then she broke down into tears, heart-wrenching sobs filled the air. John could see Jazzy's face appear in the window, but he waved at her to go away and then looked right at Anne.
"I don't believe you," Anne choked through her tears, "I don't- I don't-"
"If you didn't believe me than you wouldn't be crying Anne," John said angrily, "I saw what I saw. I wouldn't frickin' lie to you Anne. I told you, I care too much about you to do that, and that's the only reason why I told you. Dave is cheating on you. He doesn't care. He doesn't care at all." "No no no," Anne whispered over and over again, wiping her tears to no avail, "He loves me. He loves me. He loves me...."
"He's disgusted with you Anne! He's tired of you! He's CHEATING on you! If you think that that's love than maybe you do deserve him! Maybe you're the perfect frickin' match for this moron!" John yelled angrily, frustrated that he couldn't get Anne to believe him. "No I-, I can't- He- no..."
"Yes Anne," John said even more sternly than before, "Yes. I saw it with my own eyes." "I can't take this," Anne whispered before running off, tears streaming down her face and blending with the rain that fell upon her cheeks.
John tried to run after her, but then he simply stopped, wiping away his own tears that had appeared without him even noticing. John watched Anne run off with a pained look on his face. She deserved so much better than Dave. It killed John to see her being used like this. Especially because he really did love her...perhaps more than "just a friend" should. He thought she was beautiful, sweet, funny, and smart....he couldn't understand why someone so intelligent could be so damn stupid.
"Oh Anne," John whispered, staring at the ground with blurry eyes.
He heard shuffling beside him and felt a hand upon his shoulder, "You did the right thing, John..." Jazzy murmured, "She'll be okay."
John hoped that his sister was right. Anne wandered for hours before she came back to her house, feeling miserable and incomplete. The rain had not let up any and she was cold, soaked to the bone. She hardly felt anything though. All Anne felt was the pain of being betrayed. Slowly, Anne made her way up the stairs of her home, afraid of what she might find. Would she see them together? Would he smell of her? Have some lipstick on his cheek? Would she smell the perfume of someone else when she walked in? Anne walked in to find Dave alone in the family room, watching some T.V. Anne didn't smell or see anything incriminating, which was slightly comforting at least. Still, she felt hollow. She knew the truth and it was killing her inside. "Anne!" Dave exclaimed, looking up finally and noticing her.
Anne looked over at him, her makeup ruined and smeared from her tears. She hardly cared. She tried to utter a sound, but none came out. Dave got up to greet her and Anne tried to meet him strongly, but instead she merely burst out into tears all over again. She tried covering her face to hide her shame, but it was all too obvious that she was sobbing.
"Anne? Anne are you alright? Are you hurt? You look different...wait Anne seriously, why are you crying...?" Dave asked, feeling confused. Dave came up to her slowly and moved to comfort Anne as she sobbed. "Don't touch me!" Anne shrieked, wrenching her body away from Dave, "Just get away from me!"
"What? Why?" Dave laughed, "Goodness what's gotten into you!?"
Anne felt pure fury boil within her as she heard Dave laugh. This wasn't funny. This wasn't funny at all.
"SHUT UP!" Anne shrieked, "I know what you did! I know what you've been up to!" "Anne what are you-?"
"I said don't touch me!" Anne yelled again, moving from him as he tried to hold her again, "Get your dirty hands off of me. I know you've been seeing another woman. I know about Selene." Dave looked at her hard and then paced for a moment before looking at Anne in confusion, "Selene? You met her?" he finally asked.
"No I didn't not meet her," Anne hissed through gritted teeth, "I've heard about you two. I know you're having an affair you dirty b-"
"An affair?" Dave exclaimed in surprise, interrupting her, "I'm not having an affair. Anne, where in the world did you get that idea? Selene is just a woman from work." "What do you mean you're not having an affair? DON'T LIE TO ME! I know the truth! The person SAW you guys together!"
"Who? Anne, baby, they were mistaken, I promise you that. I love you baby, I would never ever put anyone before you. You're everything to me baby, everything," Dave said sincerely, looking her right in the eye. "I don't believe you!" Anne yelled, "Stop it! Stop lying to me! I know- I know- I know-" Anne's voice broke, more tears streaming down her face.
"Baby...no," Dave said, stepping toward her carefully, "I love you baby...I love you...I wouldn't lie to you." Anne burst into tears at that point. She was so confused. She didn't know who or what to believe. John was one of her very good friends....Jazzy's brother for goodness sake and Jazzy was her best friend. John wouldn't lie to her. But Dave was being so sincere. She even thought she saw a glimmer of tears in his eyes as he pleaded with her. Dave's touch was warm upon her skin as he tried to hold her, tried desperately to calm her. If he was lying, he wouldn't be so sincere...he wouldn't be like this. "Anne, my beautiful, wonderful Anne," Dave whispered as she calmed and allowed herself to be held, "Anne...I love you. That will never change. I'm not seeing another woman, nor would I ever want to. You're the only one for me."
"Please don't lie to me," Anne murmured through her tears, "I don't want to be lied to." Dave turned to look her in the eye and wiped her tears away, then caressing her cheek with a light touch as he whispered again that he would never lie to her, he loved her too much to lie to her.
Anne grasped his arm with a trembling hand as he touched her cheek. She closed her eyes and couldn't help but smile faintly.
"There you go Anne...smile for me baby, your smile is so pretty." Anne smiled bigger and Dave reciprocated the smile. She couldn't help but believe him, he was so sincere. John must have been mistaken.
"So you're really not cheating on me?" Anne asked once more, just to hear him respond.
"No baby, never," Dave said seriously, "never." Dave ever so gently put his hand underneath Anne's chin and pulled her closer to him. He kissed her so tenderly that Anne felt herself melt in his embrace. She was liquid jello by the time Dave had kissed all of her tears away. "Come upstairs and lay down baby," Dave said, "You've had a long day."
"That sounds like a good idea," Anne responded with a relieved smile, "Join me?"
"Of course," he grinned. Once upstairs, the couple cuddled for the longest time. Anne felt warmer and happier than she had in a very long time. She loved being held by Dave like this, so close to him. Every minute that passed made her realize how fully and deeply she loved him. "I didn't get to tell you...you look ravishing Anne. Jazzy gave you the makeover?" Dave asked as he pulled Anne closer to him. She looked too good to go untouched.
"Hm? Oh, yes, she did. Do you like it? I did it for you...."
"I love it," Dave grinned, "You look gorgeous. But you've always been gorgeous to me."
"You said I was plain..." Anne commented, looking at him curiously.
"I was in a bad mood, I'm sorry. I never should have said anything like that. You've always been perfect." Anne and Dave looked into each other's eyes for a moment before Dave leaned in and kissed Anne sweetly and gently, holding her gingerly. Anne wrapped an arm around his neck and kissed him back. Liquid fire coursed through her veins. She had missed this so much. It felt as if he kissed her like this for hours, though never demanding more. It wasn't long before everything John had said simply left her mind. It was so clear that he was wrong. "I love you," Anne whispered against Dave's lips, pulling herself even nearer to him, "I'm so sorry I ever doubted you."
"It's okay, really. I love you too baby..." "Let me prove it to you," Dave said with a wolfish grin as he laid her back on the bed, kissing her fervently.
He spent the rest of the night doing just this. The next morning Anne got dressed into another of her new outfits. She felt as if she were floating. She couldn't get the thoughts of last night out of her head, nor did she want to. The yelling, fighting, and crying yes, but nothing else. Anne examined herself in the mirror for a moment, double-checking her makeup. Sure Dave had said he thought she was perfect, but she still wanted to look overly wonderful for him, just in case he had another bad day. "Let me tell you Anne, you look amazing," Dave said as they sat down to breakfast.
Anne smiled and blushed. "I couldn't have done it without Jazzy."
"Well give her my regards, I've never seen you look so delicious," he grinned. Anne turned about as red as her hair and then tried to change the subject so she wouldn't be blushing like an idiot all through breakfast.
"I trimmed the hedges of the garden today..."
"Ah! The garden! Our garden. Fell in love in it, got married in it..."
Anne grinned widely and nodded. For awhile there, it seemed like he hadn't had any interest at all in that garden. She was glad to hear that he cared and remembered. "Hey, I might be a little late coming home from work today. I have to do something."
"Oh okay," Anne said, "I'll start a late dinner then."
"That'd be perfect baby, perfect." Dave helped Anne put away the leftovers and wash the dishes. Afterward, he gave her a long kiss goodbye before he set off for work. Anne was in heaven, Dave hadn't been like this in ages. While Dave was at work, Anne decided to spend a long relaxing day swimming and sunbathing by the pool. She would have gone over to Jazzy's, but she didn't want to see John. She was still confused as to whether John had been flat out lying to her, or mistaken.
Once the sun had gone down, Anne decided to read for a bit before starting that late dinner. She hoped Dave would be home soon. She missed him. Meanwhile....
Dingggggg donggggg.
"Coming!" a voice said from the other side of the door. "Hey tiger," Selene murmured as she snaked her arms around Dave.
"Hey baby, it's so good to see you."
"Likewise. Come on in."
"I'd love to," Dave said with a smirk. "I need to know, how long is it going to be before you get rid of your wife?" Selene asked as soon as they got inside.
"Way to kill the mood baby."
"Sorry, it's just frustrating waiting so long."
"It's turned out to be harder than I thought it would be," Dave muttered, "You know what she did? She got a makeover in the hopes that I'd stick around. She looks good, but nowhere near as good as you Selly."
"I don't believe you..." "Are you sure you don't still love her?" Selene continued, any trace of a smile vanishing from her face.
"No way Selly. Right now I'm just gaining Anne's trust, that'll make it easier for me to get rid of her."
"Erm..what exactly are you going to do to her?" Selene asked, looking unsure.
"Don't worry baby, I just need to hurt her enough so that she won't come back."
"Hmmm..." "Selene, my beautiful, wonderful Selene," Dave murmured as he caressed her cheek with the back of his hand, "Selene...I love you. That will never change. I'm not going to stay with her, nor would I ever want to. You're the only one for me."
"I love you, you're everything to me baby, everything. I would never lie to you," Dave said as he began trailing kisses up her arm.
"Alright, I believe you," Selene said, relaxing visibly under Dave's loving ministrations. "Good. You know you're the most beautiful woman I have ever seen in my entire life. You know that, right Selly?"
"Well aren't you charming?" Selene giggled breathlessly.
"It's easy to be charming around someone you love." Selene grinned as Dave turn to hold her hand, grinning back at her just as large.
"Just trust me baby, we'll be together before you know it. Just be patient."
"I know, it's just, I miss you tiger," she smiled.
"I miss you too baby, so you don't have to worry about a thing. I'll get rid of her real soon."
Selene nodded in approval and then grinned mischievously up at Dave, "Well, before I get rid of you for the night, would you care to join me in the bedroom?"
"Would I ever!" Dave said excitedly. "Soon, it'll just be you and me baby!"
"I can't wait. Now shut up and kiss me."
Dave grinned, "Gladly." He kissed her hard and passionately as Selene pulled him closer.
"Now prove to me that you love me as much as you say. Live up to your nickname...tiger."
And so he did. "Soon baby, I won't ever have to leave your side after an amazing night like this."
"I'll believe that once I see it."
"No worries baby, Anne is deadweight, and I always get rid of deadweight." Well, that's the end of part 3 folks. Lots of things happened in this chapter, so it ended up being longer than the rest. I hope you didn't mind! As always, comments and constructive criticisms are always appreciated. If you want me to let you know when part 4 will be underway, just let me know :)
Thanks for reading!!
